Unnecessary Carnage in Florida...

By now everyone's seen the pictures of the burning houses and dead bodies left behind by the Cessna 310 that splattered into a residential neighborhood while trying to limp back to Orlando Airport. Story here.

OK. Now. Look at this map. Tell me where you would've tried to land if you were still 3+ miles short of the airport at a couple hundred feet?

Several possible options, No?

The overriding concern that a pilot
has is to get the plane on the ground at an airport so the costs
of the mishap are minimal. Even though he is trained otherwise.
And he can demonstrate the proper
procedure in a checkride.He does
know better but losing his job
because his mishap puts the
company out of business clouds his
better judgement. From what I understand the Nascar chief pilot
was on board? Two or at least one
highly experianced pilot and one
experianced pilot and no one flying
the plane? Was the pilot in command
waiting for the other to say something? They are trained in
crew coordination also and sadly
they only use it on checkrides.
The old Pilgrim airlines had a
similar accident with fire in the
instrument panel and with his head out the window he landed on a frozen lake. Safely. Although he
was burned he flew the plane to
the closest suitable landing spot.
