A few thoughts from across the pond

A few thoughts from one of the sisters Evil:

Things I've learned in the past 10 weeks in the UK:

1. the weather is absolutely lovely in York during October and thebeginning of November

2. getting on the back door of a bus is illegal and gets you yelled at (oops, and I had only stepped off to let other people get out too)

3. it's true that people who are Canadian will tell you so within 30 seconds of meeting them. This is something I heard on the This American Life radio program but never had tested before

4. getting a national insurance number is pretty easy

5. national health care feels weird in a good way

6. discussing a Michael Moore movie with non-Americans is interesting (Sicko, people here aren't big fans of his portrayal of the UK National Health System)

7. only being innundated with election information when I choose to be is nice.

8. it's easier than I thought to get used how expensive things are due to the exchange rate. I just stop thinking about it. £35 waterproof nice winter boots are cheap to me now

9. it really does take 6 weeks for a check in dollars to clear into a UK bank account.

10. come the middle of November, the entire country gets a chest cold

11. youtube is awesome

12. people eat a lot of pork. I'm not talking a couple times a week. I'm talking everyday, as in it can be hard sometimes to find ready made sandwiches that aren't vegetarian without pork in them.

13. Christmas turkey is cooked with bacon on top

14. not being in the US on Thanksgiving is weird. Being wished Happy Thanksgiving by your Java Teaching Assistant who is Italian is even odder!

15. not having to be in class until 10:15 is nice

PS You've got to see the 1999 film, Topsy-Turvey. It is so well done. It's about Gilbert and Sullivan. The language is wonderful, the music is superb and the acting is fantastique. They were from across the pond! (That is how this PS ties in, just in case you were wondering.)
